Charleston Interns Adapts His Skills and Excels in Irrigation

This guest post was written by Malik, about his intern experience with us this summer.

My summer with Yellowstone Landscape is the best internship experience I’ve had during my college career.  As an Agriculture Mechanization major at Clemson University, I wasn’t sure what to expect with an internship in the landscape/horticulture industry and if I had the knowledge needed to be successful despite being a Turfgrass Science and Management minor.  After talking to Charleston Branch Manager, Remington Phillips at a career fair, I realized I could adapt my skills and excel.  With an interest in irrigation he made it happen and offered me an opportunity to come on board as an Irrigation Intern and I couldn’t have been more excited!

One of the best experiences I have had so far was participating in a large irrigation installation at a developing apartment complex in Mount Pleasant, SC, Legacy Apartments.  During that week, I was teamed up with Lawrence, who fell in love with irrigation about a year ago.  He took me under his wing for five days and taught me everything he knew.  By the end of the first day I was proficient at running a trencher, installing heads, fitting pipes, replacing broken parts and everything in between.  Lawrence’s dedication to teaching me while learning new things himself resonated with me and made me realize that Yellowstone Landscape is an awesome company to be a part of.  Their employees go above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that every individual is welcomed with open arms and that means a lot to me.  Everyone is equal and held accountable for everything they do, no one goes unnoticed or is treated unfairly.  I will forever be grateful for this opportunity, without them I would not have gained the confidence or expertise to be successful in my future career.

Working with Yellowstone Landscape has opened my eyes and made me truly appreciate what goes into a successful landscape company.  The knowledge and experience I have gained ties in well with Agriculture, more than you would think.  Even though the platforms are different, the work style remains the same.  The team at Yellowstone Landscape took my skills, such as; work ethic, time/people management, attention to detail, safety, and awareness and transformed them to a level I did not think was possible.  I am grateful to the people I’ve had the pleasure of working with throughout the summer.  From managers to field employees, they have all played a role in my success.

Thank you, Team Charleston!
