October Annual Spotlight Dianthus

Written by Joseph Barnes | Oct 2, 2009 4:00:00 AM

As we experience cooler temperatures and lower humidity in Central Florida, Dianthus is an excellent fall annual to consider for your landscape. Dianthus grows to one foot tall with an equal spread, though flower stalks will reach to 2 feet in height. Beautiful carnation-like flowers dot the entire annual throughout fall, winter, and spring.

Dianthus performs best in sun to part shade and prefers a well-drained soil. Moderately salt tolerant and generally pest free best describe this attractive annual. Once established, Dianthus is somewhat drought tolerant.
Flowers come in a variety of colors. Pink, red, white, and bicolor are a few colors commonly available. Container gardens, large beds, and cut flowers are common usages for Dianthus. If you plant Dianthus in part to full shade, you might be able to have it live year around. However, its appearance is best in the cooler months. Dianthus is fairly low maintenance though some trimming of flowers in the spring might be necessary to maintain a neat appearance. Learn more by contacting one of our flower vendors, Bloommasters.
